Bible Verse Wall Art: A Question of Size Text art has a hard floor that pictures do not. An image can be small and still work, because the eye takes in a shape before it takes in detail. A verse has to be read, and if it cannot be read from where people usually stand, it stops being a verse and becomes a grey rectangle. That is the most common failure with scripture prints, and it is entirely a problem of scale. Work backwards from the reading distance rather than from the wall. Stand where somebody would normally be — the far side of the kitchen, the doorway of the bedroom, the bottom of the stairs — and ask whether the longest line of the verse would fill a good part of your field of view from there. Short verses can afford to be smaller because the letters can be larger. Longer passages, and anything set in a script or hand-lettered face, need considerably more wall before the words resolve. Layout matters as much as size. A verse broken into four or five short lines with one word enlarged reads from twice the distance of the same text set as a justified block. If you are drawn to a dense typographic layout, put it somewhere people pass close by: a landing, a hallway, the wall beside a reading chair. Colour cuts the effective size too. Pale grey lettering on cream is beautiful at arm's length and invisible from the doorway. Black on white survives almost any distance and almost any light. Before you decide, print the verse on a sheet of paper at whatever size your printer manages, tape it at the intended height, and walk to the spot in the room where you actually stand most of the time. If you have to lean in to read it, the piece you order needs to be noticeably larger than you first thought.
