Pomegranate Noir: Dark Fruit in a Dark Room

Dark still life is the most light-sensitive thing you can hang. A pomegranate rendered against a near-black ground depends on a narrow band of deep reds and browns separating themselves from the shadow, and in a dim north-facing room that separation collapses: the fruit sinks and you are left with a dark rectangle. In strong afternoon sun the opposite happens, and the surface throws back enough glare to flatten the whole thing.

What this kind of image wants is steady, moderate light from the side. A wall at ninety degrees to the window, or a wall with a picture light or a nearby lamp, gives the deep tones something to work with. Direct sun on the face of the piece is the one arrangement to avoid outright, and a wall directly opposite a large window is the second worst, because the reflection sits right where the fruit is darkest.

Evening is when this subject earns its keep. Under warm lamplight the reds lift, the seeds glint, and the dark background does what it was painted to do, which is why these images belong in rooms used after dark — a dining room, a snug, a hallway with lamps rather than a skylight. A bright breakfast kitchen is the wrong home for one.

The look borrows from old master still life, so it pairs with weight: dark timber, brass, deep green or oxblood walls, heavy curtains. Against pale Scandinavian furniture it can look stranded, though it works surprisingly well as the single dark object in an otherwise white room, provided you commit to that and do not add three more.

Split fruit is worth seeking out over whole. A cut pomegranate gives you the mass of seeds, which is the one bright, complicated area in an otherwise sombre image, and that area is what carries the piece across a room. Before buying, look at the image on a screen turned down to about a third brightness. If you can still read the seeds, it will survive your lighting. If it goes to mud, choose a lighter treatment.
