People do not look at these from across the room. They walk up to them, the way they would walk up to a holiday photograph, and start hunting for detail: flaking paint on a shutter, a cat asleep on a step, the name painted on a hull, rope coiled on a jetty. That habit should decide what you buy, because the image needs to reward arriving at it, not merely being seen.
Weak examples fail at exactly that distance. Blue skies pushed so far in editing that they have gone flat, whitewash blown out to bare paper, shadows crushed to black — from three metres they look striking, and from thirty centimetres there is nothing in them. Look for texture in the white, some grain in the shadows, detail that survives being approached.
The palette is famously narrow: white, several blues, terracotta, dry olive and stone. That narrowness is an advantage in a room with a lot going on, because these images add brightness without adding many new colours. Against a cool grey wall they look crisp; against magnolia the whites turn slightly dirty, which is worth checking before you commit.
Given the up-close habit, position matters more than size. A hallway, a landing, the stretch of wall beside a kettle or a bathroom mirror — anywhere people stand still with a minute to spare — suits this subject far better than a high spot above a sofa where nobody ever gets nearer than the coffee table.
One honest caveat: this is a heavily photographed part of the world, and a great many images of it are essentially the same three viewpoints. For something that stays interesting, pick the picture with a person, an animal or a working boat in it rather than the immaculate empty alley, which is the one that starts to feel like a screensaver by the second year.
