A weak lake picture is three horizontal bands — water, hills, sky — with nothing to stop the eye sliding off the edge. A strong one gives you a way in: a jetty running out from the near shore, reeds catching the light, a moored boat, a rock breaking the surface. That foreground element does the real work, because it sets the scale of everything behind it and turns a flat panorama into somewhere you could plausibly walk. When you are choosing between two similar images, this is almost always what separates them.

Reflection is the second thing to check. Still water doubles the composition, which is the appeal, but it doubles any weakness too: a dull sky becomes two dull skies. The better examples usually carry some break in the surface — a band of ripple, wind texture across one corner, mist sitting where the water meets the trees. Perfect mirror symmetry looks impressive on a phone and slightly artificial at a metre wide, where the eye has time to notice that nothing in the picture is moving.

Colour in this subject runs cool by default: blue-grey water, green shoreline, a lot of white sky. That makes it restful and easy to pair, but it also means it can vanish against a cool grey wall. Warm the surroundings instead — oak, brass, a wool throw with some ochre in it — and the coolness of the water becomes a feature rather than a fade. Resist solving the problem by buying a more saturated image; overcooked lake photographs age badly.

Before committing, find the horizon line and work out where it will sit relative to your eye. A horizon in the lower third gives you a big open sky and a spacious, calm feeling; one in the upper third puts the emphasis on the water and reads as more enclosed. Hang the piece so that line lands roughly at seated eye level in a sitting room and standing eye level in a hallway, and the whole thing settles.
