What dates fastest in this category is anything with a year attached to it: a car model, a phone in someone's hand, a fashion silhouette, a shop sign. What lasts is architecture, geometry and light — a marble stair, a reflection across wet pavement, a lobby seen through glass, a rain-lit street with no legible make or model in it. Scan any image for those small period giveaways before you buy, because they are what will make the piece look tired in five years while everything else in it still works.

Colour grading dates just as reliably. Heavy teal-and-orange processing, thick vignettes and crushed blacks belong to a particular decade of photography, and once you can see the treatment rather than the scene, the picture has aged. Restrained tonality survives: real greys, honest blacks, one warm accent doing a job. Text is the other thing to be wary of, because a slogan set in a fashionable typeface will look dated long before the photograph underneath it does, and nobody wants to read the same three words every morning for a decade.

This category rewards restraint in the room as well. These images are usually monochrome or close to it, which means they hang well as a set of two or three and sit comfortably with black frames, brushed metal, glass and dark wood. Against a heavily patterned or brightly coloured wall the effect is lost entirely.

A simple durability test: cover the most obviously contemporary element with your thumb on the preview. If the picture still stands without it, the composition is doing the work and the piece will keep. If the image collapses, you are buying a moment rather than a photograph, and moments do not stay on walls for long.
