Horses put movement into a room in a way that few other subjects manage. A landscape is still by definition and a portrait is composed and static, but a horse — even a standing one — reads as something that could leave. Manes, tails, dust, a lifted hoof: the eye follows the implied direction, so the picture pushes energy across the wall rather than sitting quietly inside its frame.

That has a direct consequence for hanging. Give the movement somewhere to go, which means orienting the image so the animal runs into the room rather than into a corner or off the end of a wall. On a chimney breast, with space either side, a head-on gallop works. In a tight alcove it feels blocked, and the picture loses the one quality it was bought for.

The category divides into three moods. Wild herds in dust or surf are about motion and usually monochrome. Single portrait heads are quiet and closer in feeling to human portraiture, with the eye doing the work. Then there are the soft, sentimental pony images, which are a different market entirely and do not sit well with either of the others.

Colour is rarely the problem, since the palette runs to browns, greys, black and cream and gets along with wood, leather, tweed and almost any wall. Separation is the problem: a dark horse photographed against a dark background can collapse into a single shape from across a room. Check the thumbnail at small size and see whether the animal still has an outline.

If the piece is going in a child's room, buy the photograph an adult would happily hang. Horse phases are real and mostly temporary, and a strong black-and-white study will move to a landing or a study when interest moves on, whereas a rainbow-maned cartoon will move to a bin.
