Orange arrives with a whole family behind it — rust, terracotta, amber, apricot, burnt sienna — and which end of that family a print sits at changes everything about where it can hang. Burnt, earthy orange is close to a neutral and behaves like one beside wood, leather and cream. Bright, saturated orange is a signal flare and needs plenty of quiet around it.
Its best neighbours are the cool, muted ones: deep teal, charcoal, slate blue, olive, plain white. Those hold their ground while the orange does the shouting. It sits poorly beside pink and red, which muddy it, and beside strong yellow, which flattens it. If your sofa is already a warm colour, choose the earthier end of the range or the two will compete all day.
Light shifts this colour more than most. Warm evening bulbs push orange further towards red and can make a terracotta print look brown; cool daylight lifts it and makes it look fresher. Check the wall under both, because a print chosen at midday can be a genuinely different colour by nine in the evening.
Small doses do more work than large ones. A single orange-led piece in an otherwise restrained room reads as deliberate; three of them start to feel like a scheme, and schemes are harder to change your mind about later. If you want more than one, keep the others mostly neutral with orange appearing only as an accent inside the image.
Try this before committing. Hold something you already own in roughly the right shade — a book jacket, a cushion, a mug — against the wall for a day or two. You will learn far more from watching it in place through a full day of changing light than from comparing swatches on a screen.
