Where Afrofuturism Works This belongs on a wall you have already decided to make loud. A media room, a home office with dark paint, the landing at the top of a stair, the long wall of an open-plan kitchen where nothing else is competing. The imagery is saturated, high in contrast, often metallic in feel, and it assumes the room will let it lead rather than join in. The wall it does not suit is a bedroom facing a window. Afrofuturist work runs to deep purples, blacks, golds and electric blues, and in a room designed to be restful with strong daylight bouncing around it, the piece either glares or goes muddy depending on the hour. Nurseries and quiet guest rooms are the same problem in a smaller frame. The genre mixes science fiction iconography with African and diaspora reference points: braided hair rendered as circuitry, cowrie shells against chrome, portraits lit like record sleeves. That collision is the whole point, and it means most pieces already contain a lot of visual argument. Two of them on one wall cancel each other out. One, hung alone with space around it, does not. Dark paint is your friend here in a way it rarely is elsewhere. Charcoal, oxblood and deep teal all take this work well, because the blacks in the image and the blacks on the wall agree with each other and leave the gold and cyan to do the separating. Before ordering, mask out the exact rectangle on the wall with painter's tape and live with it for a day. This work usually wants to be larger than people first guess, and tape costs nothing to move when your first guess turns out to be timid.
