Contemporary African Portraiture in Matte Skin is the hardest thing to reproduce well, and surface finish decides most of it. A matte surface scatters light instead of bouncing it, so the sheen a glossy finish lays across a cheekbone never appears, and the tonal steps in a deep complexion stay separated rather than collapsing into one reflective slab. For portraiture of dark skin in particular, that scattering is what lets a face read as a face and not as a bright edge. The trade is contrast. Matte gives up roughly a stop of apparent depth in the blacks, so a portrait shot against a black backdrop will look slightly greyer than it did on your screen. That is normal, and it is part of why so much of this work is photographed against strong colour instead of black in the first place. The genre is bold: saturated studio colour behind the sitter, headwraps, printed textiles, jewellery, a direct gaze, styling doing as much work as the lighting. Fabric texture is often the second subject, and a matte surface serves that too, since woven cloth caught under a raking light needs no help from a shiny finish to look tactile. Hang it where light arrives from the side. Matte tolerates a lamp aimed straight at it far better than gloss does, so a picture light or a directional spot is genuinely available to you here in a way it would not be with a reflective surface. Worth checking before you buy: open the image at full size and find the darkest area in it. If detail is already scarce there on screen, a matte surface will take a little more of it, and you should choose a lighter-keyed portrait instead.
