Be clear about one thing before buying: this is a period style with strong opinions, and it will set the tone of a room rather than fit into it. The whiplash curves, the flat decorative colour, the ornamental border framing the figure — all of it announces itself. In a pared-back, plain-surfaced interior it can read as fancy dress. In a room with mouldings, panelled doors, patterned tile or some age in the woodwork, it looks like it belongs.

Pattern is the other thing to watch. This style is itself a pattern, and it does badly in competition. Hang it against busy wallpaper, or above a heavily patterned rug in a room with patterned upholstery, and the eye gives up. Give it a plain wall and it earns its keep immediately.

Colour in this idiom is usually muted rather than bright: sage, ochre, dusty rose, oxblood, faded gold, warm off-white. That palette is friendlier to modern rooms than people assume, and it sits comfortably beside brass, dark wood and deep green paint. Versions pushed into high saturation lose the very thing that made the style attractive.

Tall formats are native here. The style grew up on decorative panels, door surrounds and poster columns, so a vertical piece looks right in a way a wide one rarely does. Pairs work well too, hung close with a narrow gap, especially in a hallway or either side of a mirror.

The quality check is the line. Zoom in on the thinnest contour you can find, ideally where a curve turns back on itself. It should stay sharp and even, with the weight of the stroke changing on purpose. If it looks soft, broken or slightly furred, the source was a poor scan, and no amount of scale will hide that once the piece is on a wall.
