Baroque Rococo Wall Art: Ornament Without Apology

This work ends up in bedrooms and downstairs cloakrooms more than anywhere else, and the pattern makes sense: those are the two rooms where people permit themselves some theatre. A gilt-and-cherub piece that would dominate an open-plan living space feels sumptuous over a bed, and genuinely funny in a small WC, where the joke of grandeur in a tiny room lands perfectly.

Enclosure is the reason. Ornament rewards close viewing — scrollwork, drapery, all that detail — and small or contained rooms put the viewer near the canvas. In big open rooms the detail blurs to busy-ness at distance, which is why the grand salon look is harder to pull off than the boudoir one.

In a modern interior, contrast is the trick. One ornate piece against plain painted walls reads as a deliberate, confident choice; the fastest way to lose that effect is to theme the whole room around it. Let it be the only ornate thing in sight and it will look curated rather than costumed.

Palette-wise you are choosing between the two moods of the period: deep drama — oxblood, bottle green, near-black grounds with gold — or powdery lightness in blush, duck-egg and cream. Dark suits evening rooms and bedrooms; powdery suits bathrooms and dressing rooms.

Size is the common stumble: ornate detail shrinks badly, and a small rococo print reads as a postcard. Go large enough that the flourishes stay legible from where you will actually stand. If your room already has cornicing or panelling, this category slots in without effort; if the room is plain, hang the piece and then resist the urge to buy it any gilded friends.
