Deer pair with more things than most animal subjects, which is half the reason they turn up in so many rooms. The palette does the work — bracken brown, moss, oat, heather grey, all of it in a narrow band of muted naturals. Hang one next to a botanical study, a misty landscape, a woven hanging or a plain typographic print and nothing argues. Set it beside a saturated abstract or a bright graphic poster and the deer loses, because it has no colour with which to answer back.
On a gallery wall the antlers are the asset. They give a jagged, branching outline that breaks up a grid of rectangles, so a stag makes a good anchor with quieter, flatter images arranged around it. Two antlered heads in the same arrangement cancel each other out; one is a focal point, two is a hunting lodge.
Which deer you choose sets the register more than the style does. A stag reads as formal, still and slightly severe, and suits a hallway, a study, or a room with dark walls. A doe or a young deer among trees reads soft and is far easier in a bedroom or a nursery. They are not interchangeable, and a stag in a pale, gentle room tends to look as though it wandered in from a different house.
Height needs watching above a fireplace. A deer looking out of the picture at you wants to be near eye level; pushed up over a high mantel it gazes above everyone's heads and the connection that made you want it disappears. If the mantel is high, choose an image where the animal is in profile or looking down.
Check the antler tips before buying. A crop that clips the points, or leaves them a hair from the top edge, makes the whole picture feel squeezed, and antlers are the one shape in this subject that genuinely needs air above them.
