Fine Art Photography Wall Art: Before You Buy

Stand where the piece will hang and check two things: how much direct sun that wall takes, and where you will actually be when you look at it. Strong direct sunlight is unkind to any printed image over the years, so the sunniest wall in the house is the wrong home for a photograph you care about. Viewing position matters just as much — photography rewards a closer, slower look than abstract work, and its tonal subtleties are wasted on a wall you only ever pass at speed.

Choose between colour and monochrome on the room's behalf, not the image's. A colour photograph brings its entire palette with it, and the room has to accommodate every tone; a black and white one asks nothing and steadies whatever is already there. In a room with a settled scheme, monochrome is the lower-risk buy.

Canvas as a medium softens the very finest detail a touch compared with a print behind glass, and it sidesteps the glare that glass throws. For moody, atmospheric photography that trade is a good one; if the appeal of a particular photograph is razor-edge sharpness, know that you are choosing atmosphere over crispness.

Hang photography at eye level with more discipline than you would give anything else. An abstract survives being hung high; a photograph with a horizon in it does not, because the horizon wants to sit near your own eye height to feel natural.

The test worth doing costs nothing: set the image as your desktop or phone background for a week. Photography is the category people tire of fastest when they have chosen drama over depth — if you still notice it with pleasure after seven days, it will hold a wall for years.
