How Big Should Africa Wall Art Be?

Bigger than most people first choose. This is a subject of long horizons, enormous skies and animals that mean nothing without the space around them, and shrinking that down to a modest panel above a radiator throws away the only thing it had. A savannah at dusk needs width to do its job — enough that the horizon line runs past your peripheral vision when you are standing a couple of metres back — and if the wall cannot take that, the honest answer is to choose a different image rather than a smaller version of this one.

Portraits and close studies are the exception. A single elephant's eye, the texture of a rhino's hide, a beaded headdress in close-up: these are intimate images and they work at intimate sizes, in hallways and reading corners where people come close. The rule is really about what the image contains. Distance in the picture demands size on the wall; proximity in the picture does not.

Colour here is unusually consistent, which makes pairing straightforward. Dust, ochre, burnt orange, dry grass gold, deep shadow. Those sit naturally with wood, leather, rattan and unbleached linen, and they fight with cold blue-greys and chrome. If your room runs cool, a black-and-white treatment sidesteps the clash entirely and often looks better anyway, because the shapes in this subject — acacia silhouettes, herds, dunes — are strong enough to carry an image without colour.

Multiples need a light touch. Three wildlife images across one wall can start to feel like a lodge reception. If you want a group, mix registers: one wide landscape, one close texture, one graphic or patterned piece, all sharing a palette.

Measure the wall before you fall for anything. Mark the intended width on it with masking tape, live with the tape for two days, and see whether the space still feels right at breakfast. Most people find they can go one size larger than they thought, and almost nobody wishes they had gone smaller.
