What dates fastest here is the souvenir register: heaped festival beads, glittered fleur-de-lis motifs, cartoon musicians with rubber limbs, and photographs pushed through whichever colour filter was fashionable the year they were taken. All of it is fun on a trip and tiring by the second winter, because it is about an event rather than a place. What lasts is the architecture, which has been quietly good-looking for two centuries and shows no sign of stopping.

Ironwork is the reason. Wrought and cast balcony railings give you a repeating pattern with light behind it, which is a gift on a wall: intricate up close, a strong graphic band from across the room. Shutters, columns, a wet street at night, a single doorway with paint coming off it — these carry the city without needing a caption.

Colour is the second thing to judge. The real palette is chalky and knocked back: faded ochre, dusty pink, verdigris green, weathered blue-grey, and a lot of shadow. Saturation-heavy versions turn it into a postcard, and postcards do not survive daily viewing. If the greens have gone electric and every wall is candy-coloured, the picture is louder than the city ever is.

These images work best in circulation spaces and rooms with something going on — a hallway, a kitchen, the wall behind a drinks tray, a stairwell you pass at an angle. A courtyard or night street also handles a dim corner well, since half the picture is already in shadow and it does not need bright light to make sense.

One honest test if the piece is tied to a trip you took. Ask whether it would still earn its wall for someone who has never been. If yes, hang it wherever you like. If it only works because you were there, it belongs in a study, a bedroom or a back hallway where it can be a private souvenir rather than the main event.
