The cool, even daylight keeps skin tones honest and lets the metallics in the picture stay metallic rather than turning brassy. A room with strong afternoon sun is harder work, because these portraits are usually saturated and warm already, and late sun pushes them further until the reds start to shout. Photographic and painterly portraits carry their detail in the mid-tones, which is exactly the range a poorly lit wall destroys first. Placement should follow the direction the subject is looking. If the face is turned to the left, hang it so there is more wall on the left than on the right, otherwise the portrait feels crowded into the corner. That one rule fixes more badly hung portraits than any amount of measuring. Test it with a torch. Stand where the picture will hang, hold a phone light at the angle your main lamp or window sits, and see whether the beam rakes across the wall or hits it flat. If it hits flat, either move the lamp or choose the graphic, high-contrast version of the image over the softly lit one.
