Skin tones stay where the artist put them, greys stay grey, and the flat areas of colour never develop hot spots. A south facing room does the opposite: hard light swings across the wall through the afternoon, and any piece with large pale areas will glare for an hour and then go flat again. Evening light is the part people forget. Warm filament bulbs at the low end of the colour range pull blues towards grey and push warm skin tones towards orange. If the room is mostly used after dark, judge the picture under those bulbs rather than in a bright shop or on a bright screen, because that is the version of it you will actually live with. The work itself is figure led: people rendered with a confident line, simplified faces, colour used for mood rather than accuracy. It reads instantly at distance, which makes it a good candidate for the far wall of an open plan space where a detailed photograph would turn to mush. Placement follows the eyeline. A single figure looking off to one side wants space on that side rather than centred symmetry — leave the picture slightly off centre on the wall if it means the gaze has somewhere to go. Run this test before you buy. Photograph the empty wall at nine in the morning and again at nine at night, then look at the two shots side by side. If the wall changes colour dramatically between them, pick a piece with a strong dark in it, because darks hold their shape under both.
