A photograph has a thousand intermediate tones that negotiate with whatever is behind it. A collage has six colours and no interest in negotiating. Put a piece with a strong coral field against a pale pink wall and the two read as a mismatch rather than a pairing, because they are close enough to compare and far enough apart to clash. The rule that works is simple. Either match the wall to one colour in the image almost exactly, or keep it a long way from all of them. White, off-white, warm grey and near-black are a long way from everything, which is why they carry this work so reliably. The genre splices anatomical engravings, vintage photography, botanical plates and bold graphic shapes into images that should not hold together and somehow do. Heads open into planets. Bodies become landscapes. It is unsettling in a light-handed way, which is why it lands better in a workspace or a hallway than over a sofa where guests have to sit beneath it all evening. Because the edges are hard, any unevenness in the wall shows up beside them. A slightly wavy plaster line next to a razor-straight block of colour draws the eye straight to the plaster. On a rough or textured wall, choose a busier composition with fewer large flat fields. Test it with paint before you commit. Put a sample patch of your wall colour on card, hold it against the image on screen at arm's length, and squint. If the two colours seem to vibrate where they meet, pick a different wall.
