Art Drawn from African Culture This is not safari decor, and the two get shelved together far too often. Safari work is wildlife photography and colonial-era romance: an elephant at a waterhole, acacia against an orange sky, a jeep in the middle distance. Cultural work is about people and the things they make — textiles, masks, market scenes, portraiture, architecture, the geometry of woven cloth. One is landscape with animals in it. The other has hands in it. The distinction matters on a wall because the two behave differently. Wildlife images want distance and a big quiet space around them. Cultural imagery is dense, and it rewards being close enough to read: the weave of the fabric, the beadwork, the pattern painted on a wall behind a subject. Hang it in a corridor or a stairwell where people pass within a metre of it and it keeps giving something new. Colour is the other difference. Indigo, ochre, terracotta and deep green run through much of this work, and those are pigment colours rather than screen colours. They sit well against lime plaster, warm white and raw wood, and they fight cool grey paint, which drains the ochre and turns the indigo into plain navy. If you are buying more than one, resist mixing regions and centuries into a single grid. Woven cloth geometry beside a religious panel painting beside a contemporary street photograph reads as a sampler rather than a group. Pick one thread — one region, one medium, or one palette — and let the wall be about that. A useful check before ordering: photograph your wall in the evening under the lamps you actually use, then hold that photo beside the image on your phone. Warm bulbs push ochre towards brown and flatten terracotta, and that shift is where most of the disappointment with this subject comes from.
