Abstract Art for Bathrooms The mistake is nearly always scale. People walk into a small room, decide a small picture belongs in it, and end up with something the size of a paperback stranded on a two metre wall above the towel rail. Bathrooms read as tight because of the fixtures, not the wall area, and the stretch above a bath or behind a door is often the largest uninterrupted surface in the house after the stair. Abstract work is unusually forgiving in that room. There is no horizon to line up against the top of a cistern, no face to be cropped by a mirror, and no correct viewing distance, so a bold shape at a generous size does not start to look absurd the way an enlarged photograph would. Humidity is the second thing people underestimate. A room that steams up twice a day is a different environment from a hallway, and the wall opposite the shower head takes the worst of it. Run the extractor, leave the door open for ten minutes afterwards, and hang on the driest wall you have, which is usually the one the door swings against. Colour is easier here than in other rooms because most bathrooms are already white, grey or tiled. That neutrality means a piece carrying two or three strong colours will lead the whole room, while a muted piece will quietly join the tiling. Decide which of those you want before you start looking, because both are defensible and a shop will happily sell you either. Measure the wall above the towel rail or the bath, take two thirds of that width, and treat the result as your minimum rather than your target. Then check the sight line from the door: if the piece sits behind the open door for most of the day, move it to the wall you actually face.
