Willow Tree Wall Art: Built for Close Looking

Ask how close people will actually stand, because willows reward proximity more than most tree subjects. The interest is in the hanging fronds — thousands of fine vertical lines, some in focus, some drifting — and at four metres that resolves into a soft green mass. At half a metre it becomes texture you can follow strand by strand. Hang it where people pause, not where they pass at speed.

Hallways, stair landings and the wall beside a favourite chair all work for that reason. A willow over a dining table gets looked at properly, an hour at a time. The same print at the far end of an open-plan living room becomes a green blur with a trunk in it, which wastes exactly the quality that made the subject worth hanging.

Format follows the tree. Willows are broad and drooping, wider than they are tall once mature, so landscape crops usually suit them. The exception is a close study of fronds against water, where a tall frame emphasises the fall of the branches and turns the image into something closer to a curtain than a portrait of a tree.

Colour depends heavily on season, and it changes the room. Spring willow is an acid, almost yellow green that lifts a dull space and clashes with warm pinks. Winter willow is bare, ochre and grey, and reads as a drawing rather than a landscape, which is far easier to live with in a room that already has colour in it.

One caveat about reflections: willows are usually shot beside water, and water plus fine detail means a great deal of tonal information in a small area. Under a single downlight the reflected half can collapse into grey. Cross-light the piece, or hang it where daylight arrives from the side, and the water keeps its detail.
