Light does more to a whiskey image than any other variable. The subject is amber liquid in glass, and amber only glows when something behind or beside it is lit. In flat overhead light the same photograph goes brown and dull. Hang one where a lamp, a sconce or a low window rakes across it in the evening and the colour comes alive; hang it under a central ceiling fitting and you own a picture of a brown drink.
Evening is the honest test, since that is when these rooms are actually used. Check what your bulbs are: warm ones flatter this palette, while cool white ones push the amber grey and make the shadows look dirty. If the room runs on cool light, choose a higher-contrast image with strong blacks rather than a soft warm one that will simply go flat.
Backgrounds divide the category. Dark, low-key images built around a single lit glass suit a bar corner, a snug or a study, and they look expensive under lamplight. Brighter images of bottles on a shelf or barrels in a warehouse hold up better in a kitchen or a daylit dining room, where a dark piece would lose all its depth.
Placement follows the same logic as the drink itself. Above a cabinet, beside a leather chair, or along the wall of a games room — at standing eye level where people are usually on their feet, lower where they are not. A tall bottle image suits a narrow strip of wall between shelves; a wide barrel or distillery shot wants a clear run.
Given the choice, take the version with ice and condensation in it. Those small highlights are what make the glass read as glass from across a room. Without them the liquid tends to look like a flat wash of brown, however good the photograph turns out to be up close.
