The first question nearly everybody asks is whether it will make the room look like a child's. Fair question, and the answer lies entirely in the treatment rather than the animal. A bright cartoon whale with bubbles and a smile reads young; a grey-on-grey breach against flat sea, an ink-style study, or a soft two-tone silhouette does not, and none of those would look out of place in a sitting room.

Shape is the next thing. A whale seen side-on is a long horizontal and needs a wide format with water either side to carry any sense of size. A tail fluke above the surface is the opposite — a vertical idea, with the drop of water and the deep beneath it — and suits a tall panel on a narrow wall. Settling the format first rules out half the images and saves a lot of scrolling.

Bathrooms are the instinctive choice, and worth a moment's hesitation. Steam is hard on anything hanging on a wall, so if that is where it goes, keep it at the far end from the shower, and expect a room with a window to treat it better than a sealed one.

Colour runs deep blue through slate grey to near black, with pale sea foam as the only light in it. That range is easy to live with alongside white walls, pale wood, sand tones and natural fibre. It is also one of the few subjects that genuinely improves a cold north-facing room instead of making it colder, because the depth reads as calm rather than as chill.

Sit down before you order. Most whale images end up above a sofa or a bed, so you will see them from a seated eye line, looking slightly up. Check the composition from that angle: an animal set low in the frame with a lot of empty water above it reads very differently from below than it does head-on.
