The composition is horizontal and there is no arguing with it. A long table, figures ranged along one side, and the whole meaning carried by how the group is arranged from left to right. Force it into a tall format and one of two things happens: the ends of the group get cropped away, or the figures shrink to a band across the middle with dead wall above and below.
So the first question is not which version to buy but whether you have the wall for it. It wants a long, uninterrupted run — above a sideboard, along a dining room wall, above a headboard — with clear space at both ends. A hand's width of bare wall on each side is about the minimum before the image starts to feel wedged in.
Faces and hands do the work in this subject, and they are small relative to the whole. That has a practical consequence: hang it where people can actually look at it, and give it a spot where someone might stand still for a moment. A piece read only in passing loses most of what makes it worth having.
Light should be even and warm. The scene is an interior lit from the side, and lamplight suits it. A bright window directly opposite flattens the shadows that give the figures their volume, and the composition depends on that volume to stop the group reading as a row of cut-outs.
A placement note that saves regret: centre the piece on the furniture below it, not on the wall. Dining rooms and sideboards are rarely centred in a room, and the eye reads the relationship between picture and furniture long before it notices the wall. Measure the sideboard, find its middle, and work outwards from there.
