Comic Villain Portraits: The Face Does the Work

The grin is the whole engineering problem. A wide, fixed smile is one of the strongest shapes you can hang on a wall — a bright horizontal band, high contrast, sitting precisely where the eye lands first — and it carries across a room long after the brushwork and background have blurred into a general dark mass. Almost every other decision about this subject follows from that one fact.

Because the shape reads from a distance, you are really choosing where a face will be looking from. Down a hallway it is excellent: you get the full effect of the approach, and the piece does its job in the two seconds you spend walking past. Directly opposite a sofa, it is a lot of company. In a bedroom, facing the bed, it is a commitment, and one that tends to get quietly relocated within a month.

Palette in this genre is narrow and deliberate — acid green, purple, a red mouth, usually against near-black. That combination is close to unbeatable on a charcoal or dark wall and slightly cheapened on white, where the black ground turns into a rectangle. If the room is light, look for a version with texture in the background, painterly marks or splattered ink or halftone, so the dark area has something happening inside it.

Head-and-shoulders portraits want printing large, around life size at least. Smaller than that and a face becomes a keepsake rather than a picture; larger, and the eyes and mouth take on real presence, which is the entire point of the subject. Portrait orientation almost always beats landscape here, since cropping tight on a face is what gives it force.

The doorway test settles it. Stand where you would first enter the room, look at the intended wall, and ask whether you want that expression greeting you every time. If the answer is yes, buy bigger than planned. If you hesitate, put it somewhere you walk past rather than somewhere you sit.
