The honest caveat first: tea imagery is a narrow subject that lives almost entirely in kitchens, and there is a fine line between a good still life and something that belongs on a tea towel. Cups, pots, loose leaves and steam are small domestic objects, and rendered without care they slide into greetings-card territory very quickly. Browse the collection with that in mind rather than pretending otherwise.

Good examples solve it in one of two ways. Either they go abstract — the colour of brewed leaves, the ring a cup leaves on paper, the swirl of milk treated as a shape rather than a drink — or they go properly graphic, handling a teapot as a piece of industrial design with clean lines and confident negative space. Both survive daily viewing. Softly lit mugs on gingham do not.

Palette is dependable at least. Browns, ambers, cream and a green that is never quite mint sit well against wood, brick and the warm neutrals most kitchens already have, and they cope with the yellowish light of an under-cabinet strip better than cool-toned images do.

Placement is the practical constraint. Kitchen walls are short on space and long on grease, so the usual spots are the wall opposite the hob, the gap beside a doorway, or a narrow run above a worktop. Keep art off the splashback wall entirely, and out of the plume above a kettle if you can.

If you are buying for a tea drinker rather than for a kitchen, ask what they actually drink. Someone loyal to a strong builder's brew and someone with a shelf of oolong will not read the same picture the same way, and the second group tends to prefer leaves and pots to pictures of finished cups.
