Surf Art

What dates in surf art is the styling, not the sea. Sun-flare filters, heavy teal-and-orange grading, hand-lettered slogans about salt and freedom, the obligatory camper van — each one reads as a particular decade the moment that decade ends. Water and light do not date. A wave seen from inside the barrel, foam draining off wet sand, a line of swell under flat morning light: those looked the same forty years ago and will look the same in forty more.

Colour handling is the next thing to weigh. Saturated tropical blues are cheerful and demanding — they set the temperature of a whole room, and they age faster than muted work. Cooler, greyer water under overcast sky is the more forgiving buy, and it is closer to what most British and Irish coasts actually look like, which matters if you surf rather than only admire. Black and white removes the question altogether and puts the weight on shape and spray.

Format follows what you are showing. A long horizontal suits a lineup, an empty beach or a set rolling in, and it does good work above a sofa or a bed where the wall is wider than it is tall. A tall crop suits a single standing wave, a figure walking down through dunes, or a board propped against a wall, and a tall crop fits the narrow strips beside doors and windows where most people run out of ideas.

Rooms with hard surfaces take this subject best. Bathrooms, hallways, a kitchen wall, a bedroom with plain bedding: places where a large field of blue or grey has room to sit. In a room already carrying pattern the water becomes just another texture and the whole thing goes muddy.

One quick check before buying anything with a sea horizon in it. Hold a straight edge along the waterline on screen. A tilted horizon is the most distracting flaw in seascape imagery, invisible in a thumbnail and impossible to ignore once it is a metre wide on your wall.
