Scale is the whole argument with this subject. A sunset is mostly gradient: bands of colour shading into one another with very little structure to hold on to. Shrink that and you have a stripe. Give it width and the gradient does what it does in life, becoming something you look into rather than at. As a rough guide, a piece over a sofa or bed wants to span about two-thirds of the furniture beneath it, and with skies I would push toward the top of that range.
Width matters more than height. The subject is horizontal by nature: a horizon, a sun near it, and a long stretch of sky over water or land. A wide format lets the eye travel, while a squarer crop compresses the same information and makes the sky look like a paint swatch. If the only wall available is narrow and tall, look for a composition with vertical structure in it — trees, a pier, a cliff — rather than a pure horizon squeezed into portrait shape.
Hanging height follows from that. Horizon lines look natural at or just below eye level and wrong above it, because we do not look up at horizons. Placed too high, a sunset tips the whole wall and the room feels subtly off without anyone being able to say why.
The colour question is worth facing early. Orange and pink skies are warm and they warm everything near them, which is a gift in a grey-walled room and a problem in one already full of terracotta and pine. Cooler dawn images — blue-grey water, a low pale sun — are the safer choice where the room already runs warm.
Before committing, cut a newspaper sheet to the proportions you are considering and tape it up for a day. Skies fail small more often than any other subject, and ten minutes with paper tells you more than any mock-up on a screen.
