Sunflowers are unusually sensitive to the light they hang in, because so much of the image is one saturated yellow. In direct morning or afternoon sun the yellow lifts and the picture almost glows. In a north-facing room under flat grey daylight it settles towards mustard. Under warm bulbs at night it turns orange and the greens go brown. The same print gives you three moods in a day, which is either the appeal or the annoyance.
If the room is short of daylight, choose accordingly. Versions with a dark ground — black, deep blue, heavy shadow — hold their colour in poor light, because the yellow is working against something fixed. Versions set against pale sky need real daylight to look like anything, and in a dim room they go flat and slightly grubby.
Shape is the next decision. A single head close up is essentially a circle, so it suits a square format and wastes any extra width. Stems in a jug want portrait, since the point is the vertical line and the droop at the top. A field wants landscape, and the wider the better, because the repetition across the frame is what makes it worth looking at.
Kitchens, garden rooms and south-facing bedrooms are the natural homes, and the subject copes with plain surfaces far better than with pattern. Beside a busy tiled splashback or a floral curtain, a sunflower has nothing to push against and the yellow simply adds to the noise.
Before ordering, put the image on your phone at full brightness and hold the screen flat against the wall at the intended spot, at the time of day you are usually in that room. Yellow is the colour most affected by the tone of the wall behind it, and a magnolia wall in late afternoon will pull a sunflower towards dirty cream.
