Sun and Moon Wall Art: Getting the Balance Right

The common mistake is buying the symbol instead of the composition. People fall for the idea — light and dark, day and night, the pairing of the two — then hang a canvas whose two discs sit dead centre and evenly spaced, and it reads like signage rather than art. Pieces that hold up put the discs off centre, let one dominate, and use the space between them for something: a horizon, a field of stars, a wash of colour carrying from one side to the other.

Second mistake, related to the first: buying a matched pair and hanging them level with a wide gap. Two symmetrical canvases either side of a bed turn into headboard decoration and lose all their tension. If you want two, hang them close enough to read as one object, with no more than a hand's width between the edges.

Palette in this category splits fairly cleanly. There is the warm route — gold, terracotta, cream, black line — which suits sand-coloured walls, wood and rattan. Then there is the cool route, all indigo, slate and silver, which needs a darker or greyer room to look considered rather than cold. Because the motif is geometric, edges matter. Look closely at where a disc meets the background: clean deliberate boundaries hold up at any size, while soft airbrushed halos start to look cheap once the canvas is a metre across and you are standing near it.

Placement tip worth following — this subject suits walls you see when the light is low. Above a bed, along a landing, beside a reading chair. Under bright midday sun the celestial imagery loses most of its atmosphere, and it is at night, under lamps, that it does what you bought it for.
