Will Summer Wall Art Look Wrong in February?

It is the first question nearly everyone asks, and the answer depends entirely on how literal the image is. A beach at golden hour, a lemon tree, a swimming pool seen from above — these hold up in January because they are pictures of warmth and light, and warmth and light are more welcome in winter than in July. What does not hold up is anything with the season written on it: dated slogans, ice creams and deckchairs arranged as a set piece, bunting. Those go stale by October and you will notice.

Colour is the practical dividing line. Summer imagery tends to arrive in high-saturation blues, yellows and corals, and in a British winter, with the lights on at four in the afternoon, high saturation can look shrill. The versions that survive the whole year are usually a notch quieter: bleached rather than vivid, plenty of white and sand, blue that sits nearer grey than turquoise.

Where you hang it matters more than usual. A bright room with real daylight will support a saturated summer image year round, because the light in the room agrees with the light in the picture. A dim north-facing room will fight it — the picture insists it is August and the window disagrees. In dim rooms, choose the softer, hazier end of the category.

Composition deserves a thought if you are hanging one near a real window. A sea horizon on the wall beside an actual view of a car park is a hard contrast to ignore. It works better on an internal wall, or on the wall you face when sitting with your back to the window, where the picture becomes the view instead of competing with one.

Try the January test before you buy. Picture the piece on a wet Tuesday evening in midwinter, curtains shut, lamps on. If it still looks like a good image rather than a reminder of what you are missing, it will earn its place for twelve months of the year rather than three.
