Street Wall Art

The people buying this are rarely after graffiti as such. They want the energy of a city wall without the damp and the bus stop — texture, layering, a bit of wit, evidence that somebody made a mark. Which means the images that satisfy them are the ones that keep the grit: peeling paste-up, a stencil over brick, a tag half-covered by another. Clean vector imitations of the style disappoint fast.

Texture is the technical thing to look for. Good examples carry surface — mortar lines, drips, the edge where spray meets rough render — and that detail is what the eye keeps returning to. Weak ones are flat colour with a spray effect laid over the top, which looks convincing on a phone screen and thin on a wall.

Colour ranges from near-monochrome to full riot, and the room decides which you can take. A concrete-and-black interior will absorb a very loud piece. A room with patterned soft furnishings usually cannot, and a stencil in two or three colours gets you the same attitude with far less argument.

Scale should be generous. Street imagery was made to be read from the far side of a road, so something small on a big wall looks like a postcard of the real thing. Where space is limited, crop tighter rather than shrinking the whole scene — one figure, one phrase, one section of brick.

Worth saying plainly: some of this work carries political or social content, and buying it as pure decoration is a slightly awkward position to be in. Read what the image actually says before you hang it above the dining table. That is no reason to avoid the genre, only a reason to choose a piece you would be happy to explain.
