Colour is what this subject brings into a room first. Two palettes dominate: the warm traditional one of ochre, saffron, oxblood, deep indigo and printed gold, and the modern quiet one of sand, chalk, clay and a single black line. The first is rich and will lead the room; the second is nearly a neutral and will follow whatever is already there. Knowing which of the two you are buying prevents most of the disappointment in this category.

Gold deserves a warning of its own. Printed gold is a yellow-ochre colour, not a metallic surface, and it does not catch the light the way brass or gilding does. Hung next to real brass fittings or a gilt mirror it can look dull by comparison. On a plain wall, away from metal, the same colour reads as warm and deep exactly as intended.

Symmetry sets the hanging standard. Mandalas, radial motifs and mirrored figures announce every error: a half-degree tilt, a piece centred on the sofa rather than on the wall, a gap wider on one side than the other. Asymmetric subjects forgive all of that. If you are not going to hang carefully, buy the loose brushwork rather than the geometry.

Rooms with low traffic serve it best — a bedroom, a reading corner, a landing, a space kept for quiet. No picture is going to calm anyone down by itself, but a restrained palette and an uncluttered composition give the eye somewhere to rest, which is most of what people are after when they choose this subject.

Take a moment over the symbols themselves. These images come out of living traditions, and it is worth knowing roughly what a motif means before it goes up in your home — not because anyone will test you, but because a symbol you understand keeps its interest, while one picked purely for its shape tends to go quiet within a month.
