Light in the room changes this category more than it changes most. The palette is mineral and warm — terracotta, sand, dusty rose, ochre, turquoise — and warm colours need warm light to do anything at all. In a west-facing room in late afternoon these images look exactly as intended. In a north-facing room under flat grey light the same print goes chalky and faintly dirty, and the turquoise is first to die, sliding towards a dull grey-green.

Work with the room you have. North-facing and dim spaces want the higher-contrast end of the category: strong blacks, bleached cream, hard shadow across adobe, graphic pattern rather than soft gradient. South and west-facing rooms can carry the gentle sun-bleached versions that would look washed out anywhere else.

Bulbs finish the job the windows started. A cool white LED strips the life out of terracotta after dark, which is when most people actually look at their walls, so a warm lamp near the piece is worth more here than an extra size up. It is the cheapest correction available and almost nobody makes it.

The subject covers more ground than the shorthand suggests: mesa and canyon horizons, adobe walls and their shadows, cacti in flat sun, woven geometric pattern, animal skulls, big skies with weather in them. Worth knowing that those geometric patterns come from living indigenous textile traditions and are very widely imitated. If the provenance of a pattern matters to you, the landscape and abstract end of the category sidesteps the question entirely.

Check the turquoise before you commit to anything else. Hold something turquoise or teal that you already own against the wall, at the time of day you use the room most. If it looks lively, the warmer palettes will be fine. If it looks grey, buy the contrastier print and put a warm lamp beside it.
