Southwest Decor Wall Art: Working With the Palette

This subject arrives with its palette already decided: terracotta and rust, ochre, sand, bleached bone, sage green, and a turquoise that is either the making of a piece or the thing that ruins it. Everything on that list is warm apart from the sage and the turquoise, which is why the style feels coherent even when the motifs vary wildly from one image to the next.

What it sits beside follows from that. Warm timber, leather, jute, unglazed pottery, brick, cream and off-white walls are all natural partners. Cool grey, navy, chrome and gloss black are harder work, and a rust-toned desert scene on a slate grey wall usually looks stranded. If your room is cool and you are set on the subject, look for examples where the sand tones are pale and dusty rather than saturated.

Motifs within the style behave differently. Landscape work — mesas, canyon walls, desert light at either end of the day — is soft edged and recedes politely. Geometric pattern drawn from weaving is flat, high in contrast and advances towards you; it wants space around it and does not share a wall happily with a second pattern. Cacti and bleached skulls sit somewhere between the two.

Warm bulbs help this material more than most. The palette was built under strong low sun, and tungsten-toned lighting flatters it, whereas cold white light strips the warmth out and leaves the ochres looking dirty. Grey daylight mutes the whole thing, so in a north-facing room favour higher contrast examples with real darks in the rock.

The quickest sanity check is a physical one. Take the strongest colour already in the room, a cushion, a rug corner, a length of skirting, and hold it beside the image on a screen at arm's length. If the two warms disagree, you will notice it every day, and that disagreement is far easier to spot now than after the thing is hanging.
