Almost every skyline wants a wide format, and the reason is structural rather than decorative: a skyline is a horizontal event. The information runs left to right along the line where buildings meet sky, and cropping into a portrait shape throws most of it away. The exception is a single tower or a tight cluster shot from below, where the subject is height itself — that genuinely wants a tall canvas and looks wrong squeezed into a landscape one.
Panoramic ratios bring a practical problem. A very wide canvas needs a very wide, uninterrupted wall, and most rooms have fewer of those than people assume once you subtract doors, radiators, switches and the actual width of the sofa. Measure the clear span before falling for a panorama. Above furniture, filling roughly two thirds to three quarters of the width beneath is the proportion that tends to look right.
Time of day sets the mood far more than the city does. Blue hour, with office lights on and the sky still holding colour, is the most forgiving: plenty of contrast, plenty of warmth in the windows. Flat midday shots tend to look grey and documentary. Full night shots look dramatic on a screen but can read as an expanse of black on a wall unless the buildings themselves are brightly lit.
Hang height is where skylines most often go wrong. Because the rooftop line usually sits low in the frame, hanging the canvas at the standard centre height pushes the interesting band above comfortable eye level. Drop it a little. In a sitting room, aim for that rooftop line to land where a seated person's eye naturally rests.
One honest check before buying: can you actually identify the city, and does that matter to you? Some skylines are unmistakable and carry a personal association. Plenty of others are generic glass towers that could be almost anywhere. If the connection to the place is the reason you want it, make sure the shot includes whatever landmark makes it recognisable, because the smaller details will not survive the distance across a room.
