The usual mistake here is buying the blue rather than the turtle. Underwater photographs are dominated by water, frequently four-fifths of the frame, and on a phone screen that reads as a lovely wash of teal with an animal somewhere in it. On a wall, from across a room, the wash is what you see and the turtle has shrunk to a dark smudge. Judge these at thumbnail size deliberately. If the animal does not hold its shape when the image is the size of a stamp, it will not hold a room.

Good examples solve that with contrast or with light. A turtle silhouetted against a bright surface, sunbeams cutting down through the water, a pale sandy bottom behind a dark shell — all of them separate the animal from its background. Weak ones photograph a mid-blue turtle in mid-blue water and rely on the caption to tell you what you are looking at.

Water temperature, in the colour sense, decides where the piece can live. Tropical images run warm and green-leaning; deeper open-ocean shots run cold and almost navy. A warm turquoise picture fights a cool grey room and looks garish in it, while a deep blue one can look bleak in a small warm room lit by yellow lamps. Hold the image up against your wall in the evening, not at midday.

Placement invites a cliche worth resisting. Bathrooms are the obvious home and there is nothing wrong with that, but three sea creatures, a shell mirror and a rope-effect shelf tips the room into a gift shop. One good turtle in an otherwise plain bathroom does far more than a themed set.

Look closely at the carapace before deciding. The scutes on a turtle's shell form a clear geometric pattern, and a sharp rendering of it is genuinely worth having close to. If those plates blur into a general brown-green mottle, the photograph was taken from further away than the picture wants you to notice.
