Room Wall Art: Wide, Tall, and Why It Matters

Orientation is the first decision with interior scenes, and it follows from where the image puts its information. A room shot straight down its length — a corridor, a doorway view, a staircase disappearing upward — carries its interest in the floor and the ceiling, and needs a tall format to keep both. A room seen side on, with a sofa, a window and a table laid out across the frame, is a horizontal subject and will fight a portrait crop for the rest of its life.

There is a second, stranger consideration: you are hanging a picture of a room inside a room. If the pictured interior is close in style to the real one, the effect is a slightly uncanny echo. If it is wildly different, the two arrangements argue. The comfortable middle ground is an interior that shares a palette with your room but not a period, which reads as a view into somewhere else rather than a comment on where you are standing.

Light direction is worth a moment. Interior photographs almost always have an obvious source, usually a window at one side, and hanging one so its light falls opposite to your own window makes the whole thing look pasted on. Match the direction and the image settles into the wall.

These pictures reward being hung where someone stops. The pleasure in them is small: a chair pushed back, a folded newspaper, the edge of a rug. Above a desk, beside a reading chair or along a landing works better than high above a sofa, where nobody gets close enough to find any of it.

Stand in your doorway and note what the room shows you first. If the answer is a long view, buy tall. If it reads as a wall of things, buy wide, and hang it so the pictured floor line and your real floor line are not competing at the same height.
