Most of this imagery is built around a single light source — a star, a lantern, the glow over a manger — which makes it unusually sensitive to the light in your own room. Under a cool ceiling bulb the golds go brassy and the shadows go flat. Under warm lamps the same picture deepens and the illuminated area does what it was painted to do. Given the choice, hang it where a lamp reaches it from the side.

Dark-ground nativity and adoration scenes are the most demanding in this respect. They hold a great deal of shadow, and shadow needs either genuinely low light to look rich or good separation of tones to survive a bright room. A snowy village or a star over open country is much easier to place, since it carries its own brightness.

Seasonal display raises a practical question: does the piece come down in January? If it does, leave the fixing in place and pick a size that stores flat under a bed or on top of a wardrobe. If it stays up all year, avoid the obvious seasonal cues — holly, wrapped gifts, snow-laden pine — and choose the subject in its plainer devotional form, which reads as art rather than decoration in July.

Placement carries meaning here that it does not in other categories. A hallway or a dining room lets a piece be seen by everyone who visits; a bedroom or a study keeps it personal. Neither is wrong, but it is worth deciding deliberately rather than hanging it wherever the old nail happens to be.

Check the tones against your wall colour before ordering. Deep reds and golds sit beautifully on cream, warm white and soft green, and struggle against strong blue or cool grey, where the warmth of the image starts to look orange and oddly separate from the room around it.
