Reading Wall Art

What dates fastest here is anything tied to a moment: recognisable current book covers, slogan prints about coffee and rainy days, and illustration styles that clearly belong to one decade. What lasts is plainer — stacked spines with no legible titles, a hand holding an open book, the geometry of a library shelf, a figure reading with the face turned away. Strip out the specifics and an image stops belonging to a particular year.

Colour ages too. Muted, papery tones such as cream, tan, faded green and ink blue still look right ten years on. Very saturated flat colour tends to read as the season it was made in. If you want something brighter, let the brightness sit in one accent rather than run across the whole image.

These belong in rooms where people sit still: a reading chair corner, a study, the wall beside a bed, the end of a hallway lined with shelves. They fall flat in a kitchen or a busy family room, where nobody is in the mood the picture is describing and the image just becomes furniture.

Scale is easier here than in most categories, because the subject is intimate by nature and survives at modest sizes. A small piece hung low behind an armchair, at the eye level of someone sitting rather than standing, reads better than a large one hung high. Faced with a big empty wall, three small pieces in a row usually beat one oversized print.

Test before you commit. Cover the product image with your thumb so only the top third shows. If what remains is still interesting as a shape, the composition is doing real work. If it collapses without the recognisable book in the middle, the subject is carrying the picture alone, and that wears thin on a wall you pass every day.
