Ears decide everything about how a rabbit reads on a wall. They are the only part of the animal that is genuinely translucent, so any image shot with light behind them glows warm orange and pink at the top of the frame, and that single detail does more for the picture than the rest of the animal combined.

Their angle also sets the mood: upright ears read as alert and cheerful, ears laid flat along the back read as frightened, one up and one down reads as comic. Check them before anything else.

Eye placement is the second thing shaping the effect. A rabbit's eyes sit on the sides of its head, so it almost never looks straight out at you the way a cat or a dog does. That makes the subject gentle and unconfrontational, which is why it survives in bedrooms and children's rooms where a direct animal stare would keep people awake.

Size wants restraint. Blown up beyond a certain point a small mammal becomes uncanny rather than charming, and a rabbit's head printed larger than a human one crosses from sweet into slightly unnerving. This is a subject that suits modest formats, and one of the few where two smaller images hung as a pair beat one large one.

Colour is easy to place. Fawn, grey, cream and the soft green of meadow grass go with almost any neutral scheme, and the subject rarely dictates anything. If a room needs more from the picture, look for a strong background — frost, dark undergrowth, deep shadow — rather than expecting the animal to supply the contrast.

Keep it low on the wall. Rabbits are ground-level animals, and an image of one mounted high loses the sense of crouching in grass that makes it work. Just above a chair rail, or on the wall beside a bed, is where the subject sits most naturally.
