Poster-style images pair badly with other posters and well with almost everything else. Two bold, flat-colour, type-led pieces side by side will argue about which one you read first, and neither wins. Put one next to a photograph, a botanical study or a soft abstract, though, and the graphic edges give the softer image something to push against. The rule of thumb is one loud thing per wall.
Typography decides how loud it actually is. Large lettering makes a piece behave like signage — it will be read, every time, by everyone who walks in — while a small caption line at the foot lets the image lead and the words merely finish it. In a kitchen or a home bar, signage is welcome. In a living room it becomes a slogan you have to live with.
Alignment matters here more than in painterly categories, because the poster tradition is one of flat, disciplined presentation. Keep the surround plain and the hanging strict. Poster-led gallery walls look best on a shared baseline or a shared centre line rather than the loose scatter that suits family photographs.
Colour blocking is the other pairing lever. Pull one colour out of the poster and echo it in a cushion, a lampshade or a book spine nearby, and the piece stops looking as though it was hung on its own. Match nothing at all and it reads as a leftover from another room.
Before buying, read the words out loud. Poster art is text you will see several thousand times, and a phrase that seems dry and funny in a browser tab can wear thin by the third month. If you would not say it to a guest, choose the version without the line.
