The bill is the whole picture. It runs close to a third of the bird's length, ends in a hook, and carries that loose pouch of skin beneath it — a shape nothing else on the water has. On a wall that means a pelican stays legible in silhouette at a distance where most seabirds turn into a white blur, and it means the composition lives or dies on whether the bill is clear of its background. A bill lost against a pale sky is a wasted image.

Posture gives you three quite different pictures. A bird standing on a post is vertical, formal and slightly comic, and suits a narrow wall or a bathroom. A glide low over water is long and horizontal, calm, and made for the space above a bed or a bench. A dive, wings half-folded, is all diagonal energy and needs room around it or it looks trapped.

Colour is gentler than people expect. Brown pelicans bring grey-brown, cream and a flush of yellow on the head; white ones are close to monochrome with black wingtips. Both sit easily in coastal rooms without dragging in the full turquoise-and-coral seaside kit, which is why they work in a hallway or a study where a beach scene would feel out of place.

Weak examples flatten the bird into a generic waterfowl shape or bury it in a busy marina. Strong ones keep the eye visible — small, pale, dark-rimmed, sitting close to the base of the bill — because that single detail is what stops the bird looking like a decoy.

Hang it where you will meet it side-on rather than dead ahead if you can. These birds are drawn in profile more often than not, and a piece like that answers a wall you approach along a corridor far better than one you stand square to.
