Before you fall for anything olive, look hard at the wall it will hang on. Stand where the art will go and study the paint at midday and again under the evening lamps: if it has warm, yellow or pink undertones, olive art will sit comfortably against it; if it is a cool blue-leaning grey or a stark bright white, olive can look muddy beside it — faded rather than chosen.

That fussiness comes from what olive actually is: a green carrying a lot of yellow and a little black. It shifts more than most colours as the light changes, going golden under warm bulbs and grey-green on overcast days. This is part of its charm, but it means the safest homes for olive art are rooms with warm, consistent lighting.

Pairing is where olive earns its keep. It flatters timber of every shade, tan and cognac leather, cream, rust, ochre and unbleached linen, which is why it has become the default art colour for rooms built on natural materials. What it resists is sitting beside cool pastels and icy blues; those combinations can be made to work, but rarely by accident.

Bear scale in mind too. Olive is a low-contrast, recessive colour, and a small olive print disappears into the background faster than a small piece in almost any other shade. Go one size larger than instinct suggests, or pick a piece that carries cream or rust within it to lift the contrast for you.

For dim rooms, one candid caveat: dark olive in a dark corner reads as brownish black, and the subtlety you chose it for disappears after sunset. In poorly lit spots, choose olive art with plenty of lighter sage or cream in the mix, and let the deep, moody versions have the daylight they need.
