Numerals belong in rooms where people are moving or working: a hallway, a stairwell, a home office, a workshop bench, the wall above a kitchen worktop. They read as signage, and signage is something you glance at in passing. The bedroom is where they reliably fail — a large figure on the wall facing the bed is the last thing you see at night and the first in the morning, and it turns out a number is not restful company.

Typeface does most of the work in this category. A digit set in a heavy grotesque is a graphic, flat and modern, wanting a plain wall and hard-edged furniture around it. The same digit in worn enamel, fairground gilt or a sign painter's brush script is an object with a history, and it needs a room with some age or texture to answer it. Decide which of the two you are after before you start comparing colours.

Meaning matters more here than with almost any other graphic subject. A house number you once lived at, a year that means something, a race number, a road or route: these earn their place because someone can ask about them. An arbitrary numeral chosen because the shape looked good is wallpaper, and it will feel like wallpaper within a month.

Spacing is what people get wrong when hanging several together. Digits are different widths — a one occupies far less room than an eight — so measuring the gaps between frame edges produces a run that looks subtly drunk. Measure centre to centre instead, and keep those intervals identical.

Worth knowing before you choose: numerals date faster than most subjects, because type styles date. If you want something still looking deliberate in ten years, pick a form that has already survived a century, such as a station clock face, a cast iron plate or hand-painted signwriting, rather than the display font currently on every shopfront.
