Mushrooms need more wall than people expect. The subject is small in life, and a small print of a small thing reads as a nature-guide plate rather than artwork — correct, tidy and easy to walk past. Printed large, so the gills read as ridged architecture and the cap fills the frame, the same image stops being a specimen and starts being a picture.

There is an exception worth knowing. A grid of several small studies — different species, same treatment, hung tight together — works precisely because the repetition supplies the scale that any single one lacks. What does not work is one small mushroom alone on a large wall, which looks like something fell off.

Underside views beat top-down views nearly every time. From above, most mushrooms are a brown or red disc; from below or at ground level you get radiating gills, the stem, the fringe of the cap and a shape that actually has structure. If you are choosing between two images, take the one shot from lower down.

Colour splits the subject in two. Fly agaric reds and fairytale styling go one way, towards whimsy and children's rooms; the woodland browns, greys and creams of real forest fungi go the other, towards something closer to a still life. Both are legitimate, but they do not hang together, and a wall mixing them looks undecided.

Mark the outline in masking tape on the wall before you order anything for a large space. Fungi photographs are often shot against a dark, out-of-focus forest floor, and a big dark rectangle behaves very differently in a room from a big pale one. Taping the shape out takes two minutes and settles the argument you would otherwise have after it arrives.
