The commonest mistake is hanging one poster alone in a soft room — sofa, lamps, curtains, rug — and expecting it to behave like a painting. Poster design exists to shout at a passer-by from across a lobby: dense type, hard contrast, a hierarchy built for selling tickets. One of those above a sofa makes the room feel like a foyer. Four of them together on one wall read as a collection, which is a completely different and much better effect.
Because they work as a group, decide the group's rule before buying the first one. Same size and same frame is the easiest discipline. Failing that, pick one thread and hold it: one decade, one genre, one colour running through all of them, or all illustrated rather than photographic. Without a rule the wall grows by accident and looks it.
Judge the design, not the affection. The ones that survive on a wall for years would still be handsome with the text removed: a strong silhouette, one clear idea, a restrained palette. Photographic montages of floating faces are the opposite and age badly, because a crowd of faces has no shape to fall back on once the novelty goes.
Placement follows all of this. Hallways, stairwells, a study, a media room, the wall going down to a basement: circulation spaces suit posters because you read them in passing, at pace, which is roughly how they were designed to be read. Formal dining rooms and calm bedrooms almost never take them.
Hang the first one and live with it for a fortnight before adding a second. That gap tells you whether you enjoy looking at it or simply enjoyed the idea of owning it, and it stops you buying four in one evening and discovering that they only agreed with each other on a screen.
