The first question people ask about mixed media is whether the texture survives printing, and the honest answer is that it survives as image rather than as surface. Torn paper edges, brush ridges, layered newsprint and scratched-back paint all show clearly in the picture, but the canvas face stays flat, so nothing catches under your hand. What that means in practice is that the illusion depends on even light. A lamp raking sideways across a flat surface gives away the flatness instead of enhancing it. Hang these where daylight or a diffuse ceiling light reaches the whole face of the canvas evenly, and note that a picture light angled sharply down the surface, which flatters an oil painting, does mixed media no favours at all.

Scale rewards this category more than most. The interest lives in small events — a stamped mark, a scrap of text, a drip running into a printed pattern — and those events vanish when the piece is too small. A larger canvas keeps them legible from the sofa and turns them into a reason to look again a month later, while small mixed media tends to read as one busy patch.

Pairing needs a light touch. These pieces are already collages of several visual languages, so hanging one beside another collage produces noise. They sit much better alone on a plain wall, or with something deliberately quiet nearby: a line drawing, a plain photograph, an empty stretch of paint.

A practical check before you commit — open the largest preview and look for a clear focal point. Strong work in this style has a hierarchy: one dominant shape or colour, then supporting incident around it. Weak work spreads the same level of activity edge to edge, and that is the sort you stop seeing within a fortnight.
