Scale decides everything in this category. A small minimalist print on a large wall does not read as restrained; it reads as unfinished, a full stop on an empty page. Minimal work needs either genuine size or a deliberately intimate setting — a single line drawing can hold a large wall only if it is large itself, or hold a small alcove at modest size.

Orientation should follow the gesture in the image. A horizontal composition — a reclining figure, one long unbroken line — wants the wall above a sofa or sideboard; tall, vertical pieces suit the slivers of wall beside windows and doors that most art cannot use. This category is unusually good at those awkward narrow spots.

Resist the gallery wall. Clustering six minimal prints together defeats the entire point, because the emptiness around each piece is part of the composition. One piece per wall is the discipline that makes the style work, and it has the side benefit of costing less.

Judging quality is unforgiving here: with so little in the frame, every element carries weight. Look closely at the line itself — its confidence, its variation in weight, where it chooses to break. In minimal work a wobble has nowhere to hide, and a piece drawn with conviction announces itself within seconds of comparison.

For sizing, use the furniture rule: artwork above a piece of furniture should span roughly two-thirds of that furniture's width, and minimal work sits at the top of that range, not the bottom. Measure the sideboard, take two-thirds, and buy to that number rather than to what looks respectable on a phone screen — nearly everything looks big enough on a phone.
