What dates in this category is whatever was current when it was made: contemporary kit, a slogan, a flag rendered in the graphic style of its decade, an insignia stylised into something resembling a logo. What lasts is the quieter end — an aircraft silhouette against cloud, a line of vehicles crossing open country, hands working on machinery, a cemetery under snow. The first kind is an argument hung on a wall. The second is a picture.

Monochrome does a great deal of the lifting here, and not only for nostalgia. Black and white reads as document, which suits a subject whose appeal is usually historical rather than decorative. Heavy colourisation of an old photograph tends to pull the other way, towards something that looks staged, putting a modern gloss on an image whose value was that it was not modern.

Geometry should steer the format. Aircraft, ships and convoys are long horizontal things and want a wide frame with air around them; cramped into a square they lose the distance that makes them worth looking at. Vertical suits a single figure, a tail fin, a memorial, or a rank of headstones receding uphill.

Placement deserves more thought than most subjects get. A study, a landing or a hallway carries this comfortably. A shared living room asks every visitor to sit opposite it for an evening and form a view, and not everyone reads these images the same way, particularly if service touched their own family.

If the piece commemorates someone you are related to, two practical things help. Hang it where you will actually pass it daily rather than in the room kept for visitors, and give it a wall of its own. Grouped into a gallery arrangement with three landscapes and a pet portrait, it quietly becomes decor. Alone, with space around it, it keeps the weight you bought it for.
